Friday night, a new (to me) pub (Liam Flynn's), a new (to me) beer (Union, a local brew), soccer on the TV (U.S. vs. Jamaica), enough of a crowd to make a din that's louder than the voices in my head, enough pretty women to look at and smile at if I catch their eye...it's a place to be for now.
a time between the summer and the fall
unwilling to let go of summer hope
for love, for change, for something new to come
still looking for some thing I cannot name
a girl, a song, a fight, a victory
something to justify my time on earth
perhaps it is a poem or a song
that might fill up this dull and empty ache
but I suspect that many hungry ghosts
wander the earth in search of such a muse
if I were wise I'd go and sit zazen
instead of occupying this barstool
but this beer, too, is only "just like this"
(as one Zen master once described the truth)
there's nowhere else to be but here and now
so drink! and watch the world reveal itself.
